UK retail footfall decreased by 0.4% in August, a slower decline than July’s 3.3% drop. Retail parks saw a 2.6% increase in footfall, while high streets and shopping centers experienced smaller decreases. The riots earlier in the month impacted footfall, but warmer weather and sales helped boost numbers.
Analyst Andy Sumpter believes that a combination of a bank holiday, lower inflation, and better weather encouraged shoppers to visit UK retail locations. Retail parks had a strong month, possibly due to picking up traffic from town centers during the riots. Retailers hope for continued growth in store traffic.
Shop prices in the UK entered deflation in August, with a 0.3% decrease compared to the same time last year. This marked the first deflation since 2021. The British Retail Consortium noted that shop price growth remained at its lowest rate since October 2021, with prices decreasing during the first week of August.
