August was a turbulent month for fund managers amid a tech sell-off and rate cuts, along with concerns over the UK economy. Two-thirds of funds were up with a range of -6.58% to 5.29% performance. Brazil equity and gold funds dominated, while China A-share equity and US small caps lagged behind.
The best performers in August were Brazil equity and gold funds, with returns ranging from 5.29% to 5.07%. Gold prices hit new highs at around $2,533 per ounce. On the other hand, the worst performers included China A-share equity funds and US small cap funds, signaling a diverse market performance.
Ben Yearsley of Fairview Investing noted the volatility in August, attributing it to a mix of market panic and eventual gains by month end. Despite the uncertainty, he advises investors to stay calm and hold their investments. Looking ahead, markets are bracing for party conferences, tax changes, and the US presidential election.
