JetBlue to build airport lounges in New York, Boston

From CNBC: 2024-09-19 11:23:20

JetBlue Airways is set to open its first airport lounges at JFK and Boston airports next year, targeting high-spending travelers. This move includes a new premium credit card partnership with Barclays. Lounge access will be available to premium cardholders, Mint business class passengers, and frequent flyer status holders.

JetBlue has been cutting costs and returning to profitability by deferring new Airbus jetliners and reshaping its route network. The airline is also considering new ways to utilize its Mint cabin-equipped aircraft, which offer premium amenities. The lounges will feature cocktail and espresso bars, light bites, and workspace areas.

The lounges will initially only be accessible to certain travelers, including high-tier loyalty program members and premium cardholders. JetBlue is cautious about lounge capacity to avoid overcrowding and aims to deliver a thoughtful experience. The company may introduce a mini Mint cabin on select aircraft, but further details were not confirmed.

Other airlines like Delta, United, and American have also been upgrading their airport lounges to attract high-spending customers. Delta recently opened its first Delta One lounge at JFK Airport, catering to its premium cabin passengers and elite SkyMiles members. Credit card companies like American Express, Chase, and Capital One have also expanded lounges across the country to attract consumers.

Southwest Airlines is planning to introduce seats with extra legroom for additional revenue, marking a significant change in its operations. This move follows other airlines like Spirit and Frontier, which have launched seat bundles with more space and early boarding options to appeal to customers. Southwest will provide more details at an upcoming investor day.
