NFL’s next big media rights payday is years off

From CNBC: 2024-09-04 10:45:01

In 2021, the NFL signed an 11-year, $111 billion media rights deal. The NBA followed suit with an 11-year, $77 billion deal. The NFL can opt out of its deal, except with Disney, after the 2028-29 season, potentially changing the landscape of sports media rights deals entirely.

Given the current state of media, with companies merging and Netflix entering live sports, potential bidders for sports games in four to five years could be entirely different than today. The future of sports media rights deals will also be affected by the dwindling pay TV bundle, with 4 million customer losses this year to date.

The long-term nature of current media deals has brought some certainty to the media ecosystem. The NHL’s media deal runs through 2027-28, MLB’s until 2028, the PGA Tour’s until 2030, and ESPN secured the College Football Playoffs until 2031. These deals provide consistency in cash flow for leagues, media companies, and pay TV providers.
