S&P 500 up, tech stocks rise, energy and financials down

The S&P 500 closed higher as tech gains offset weakness in energy and financials ahead of an inflation report. The tech-heavy Nasdaq rose by 0.8% while the Dow fell by 0.2%. Consumer price index data for August is due Wednesday.

Tech stocks rose despite Apple facing a setback of repaying 13 billion euros in back taxes. The company unveiled its iPhone 16 to boost sales and AI features. Energy stocks dropped 2% following a dip in oil prices amid demand concerns and production halts in the Gulf due to Tropical Storm Francine.

Financials slipped as Wall Street banks cautioned lower outlooks on net interest income and trading revenue. Oracle shares surged on strong cloud demand while JetBlue announced a board shake-up. The Harris-Trump presidential debate is set for 9 p.m. ET.
