Taiwan’s defense ministry aims to receive the first new F-16V fighter jets by the end of 2022, after delays blamed on international fluctuations. The $8 billion deal approved by the U.S. in 2019 will strengthen Taiwan’s defense against China, with the island on track to have more than 200 F-16 jets.
The F-16V jets feature advanced avionics and radar systems to counter the Chinese air force, including their J-20 stealth fighter. Taiwan is converting 141 older F-16A/B jets into the F-16V type and has ordered 66 new F-16Vs, but faces delays including software issues.
The U.S. State Department is actively reviewing policies to expedite arms sales to Taiwan, which has reported delays in weapon deliveries due to supply shortages for Ukraine. Taiwan’s aging fighter jets, like the French-made Mirage 2000s, have faced challenges, with one crashing recently during a training exercise.
Despite delays, Taiwan’s air force remains vigilant against Chinese military aircraft approaching the island. Taiwan rejects China’s sovereignty claims, with tensions heightened in the region as the U.S. government works to ensure timely delivery of arms to Taiwan.
