AT&T and TPG are in talks to merge DirecTV with Dish, creating the largest U.S. pay-TV provider with about 16 million subscribers. Antitrust scrutiny is expected, but industry competition has grown since a failed attempt in 2002. The deal would allow Dish to focus on building its 5G network.
Dish and DirecTV have had on-and-off merger talks since 2002. EchoStar acquired Dish in late 2023. DirecTV is currently locked in a dispute with Disney, affecting 11 million customers’ access to ESPN during the U.S. Open. Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros Discovery’s plan to launch Venu Sports is also ongoing amidst legal issues.
