The Russell 2000 small-cap index rose over 1.5% on Wednesday, nearing its 52-week high of 2,300, outperforming major indexes. If it closes at current levels, it will be the highest since November 2021. Small caps have been a hotly debated trade on Wall Street in 2024, with strategists arguing that lower rates and solid US economic growth make a strong case for investing in them. Morgan Stanley’s CIO, Mike Wilson, recently shifted to a “neutral” on small versus large caps, waiting for leading macro indicators to show a clear growth acceleration. Small caps offer cheap valuations and potential earnings expansion.
