The Court of Justice for the European Union has ruled that Meta must reduce the amount of personal data it collects for targeted advertising, following a lawsuit by privacy advocate Max Schrems.
The CJEU emphasized that online platforms like Facebook cannot use all personal data for advertising without time or data type restrictions. This comes after Schrems argued Meta used his sexual orientation to target ads.
In response, Meta emphasized its commitment to data privacy and stated it has invested over five billion euros in privacy measures. Schrems’ lawyer noted that only a small portion of Meta’s data pool will now be allowed for advertising, even with user consent.
