From CNBC: 2024-10-09 08:00:01

A CNBC investigation into counterfeit weight loss drugs has revealed an international illegal marketplace operating mainly in Novo Nordisk’s diabetes drug Ozempic and its obesity drug Wegovy, as well as Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro and Zepbound. Criminals are taking advantage of the skyrocketing demand for these treatments. The rise of counterfeit and diverted drugs poses serious health risks, as fake products can be fatal to those using them. Counterfeiters have even tried selling a weight loss drug that hasn’t yet been released to the market. Illegal drugs are commonly seized at JFK International Airport, where more than 60,000 counterfeit and illegal goods were intercepted last year. US Customs and Border Protection Director Sal Ingrassia stated that they often see diverted, counterfeited, or illegally shipped drugs at the airport facility. To tackle the issue of counterfeit and diverted drugs sold online, the pharmaceutical industry has teamed up with cybersecurity companies to take down illegal websites and social media accounts impersonating drug manufacturers. Fake and diverted drugs are usually ordered online or through social media accounts, with both individuals and doctors’ offices falling victims to counterfeit products.
