Irish Data Protection Commission fines LinkedIn €310 million for privacy violations

LinkedIn, owned by Microsoft, was fined €310 million for privacy violations in its tracking ads business. The Irish Data Protection Commission’s inquiry into LinkedIn Ireland Unlimited Company concluded following a complaint to the French Data Protection Authority.
The investigation focused on LinkedIn’s processing of personal data for behavioral analysis and targeted advertising based on user profiles. The Commissioners for Data Protection found issues with the lawfulness, fairness, and transparency of this processing, leading to the significant fine.
DPC Deputy Commissioner Graham Doyle emphasized the importance of lawful data processing, stating that processing personal data without a proper legal basis is a serious violation of individuals’ right to data protection. This decision highlights the impact of privacy violations on user rights and the stringent consequences for companies found in breach.
