Italian prosecutors have accused seven people and two sub-contractors of fraud and violating airplane safety rules in connection with flawed parts produced for Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner by an Italian company linked to Leonardo. Cheaper and non-compliant materials were used in the production of parts, compromising aviation safety.

Investigations revealed that at least 4,829 non-compliant titanium components and 1,158 non-compliant aluminium components were manufactured, posing a risk to aircraft safety. Leonardo and Boeing were victims of the alleged crimes and have cooperated with the probe. The suspects will have the opportunity to present new evidence in their defense before a trial is considered.

Leonardo has chosen not to comment on the matter, while Boeing plans to issue a statement in the near future. The prosecutors in the city of Brindisi are investigating the case and will determine if a trial is necessary based on the evidence presented by the accused parties.
