McDonald’s E. coli outbreak: CDC updates case count

From CNBC: 2024-10-25 16:08:54

A deadly E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounders has resulted in 75 cases across 13 states. Out of 61 patients, 22 have been hospitalized, with two developing kidney failure. The CDC warns more cases may arise, and McDonald’s stock fell 3% on the news.

Health officials suspect slivered onions in Quarter Pounders as the contamination source. McDonald’s has removed them, affecting stores in 11 states. California-based Taylor Farms, the onion supplier, recalled products due to E. coli concerns. Several other fast-food chains have also pulled onions from select restaurants in response to the outbreak.

Federal agencies are investigating if Quarter Pounder beef patties are to blame for the E. coli outbreak. McDonald’s has temporarily stopped selling Quarter Pounders in affected regions and is working with authorities to contain the spread. The company’s third-quarter earnings report next week may shed light on the incident’s impact.
