An independent body in Europe, supported by Meta’s Oversight Board, has been certified by Ireland’s media regulator to handle appeals against policy violations by social media companies like Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube. The Appeals Centre Europe will review cases within 90 days and ensure platforms’ decisions align with their content policies.
Funded through fees from social media companies and users, the Dublin-based Appeals Centre aims to provide an unbiased process for resolving disputes. However, online platforms can choose not to participate, and the body cannot enforce a binding settlement. Thomas Hughes, the former director of the Oversight Board, will lead as CEO.
The Appeals Centre will have a team of experts and a board of seven non-executive directors to oversee the dispute resolution process. Users will be able to submit their disputes to the body before the year ends, with a focus on ensuring fair and impartial application of content policies by social media platforms.
