Amazon Prime Video to stream Diamond regional sports networks
From CNBC: 2024-11-13 16:02:45
Diamond Sports Group has struck a deal with Amazon’s Prime Video to stream its 16 regional sports networks, available as a subscription for Prime customers in each team’s area. Details on pricing will be announced later. The move is part of Diamond Sports’ efforts to restructure after filing for bankruptcy protection.
In a previous deal, Diamond Sports partnered with FanDuel to rebrand its networks as FanDuel Sports Networks. The company will seek court approval for its reorganization plan, which has faced criticism from Major League Baseball and the Atlanta Braves. Both parties raised concerns about the company’s future viability.
Diamond Sports filed for bankruptcy due to high debt and declining cable TV viewership. The company has secured TV and streaming rights with the NBA and NHL, negotiating similar deals with MLB teams. Other regional sports networks, like the YES Network, have also launched streaming options, balancing pricing to avoid disrupting cable TV contracts.
Amazon’s Prime Video already airs select Yankees games and will now feature Diamond Sports’ networks through a subscription model. The pricing strategy aims to maintain cable TV revenue streams while adapting to changing consumer preferences. Diamond’s partnerships with major sports leagues highlight its commitment to staying competitive in the evolving media landscape.
