China’s Baidu receives license to test autonomous vehicles in Hong Kong with Apollo robotaxi service, approved for trials with 10 self-driving cars in North Lantau until 2029. Backup operator onboard during trials, marking Baidu’s first autonomous vehicle testing permit outside mainland China.

Hong Kong government promotes autonomous vehicles since 2017, now allowing wider trials on public roads with new regulatory legislation. First pilot license issued under new regime, Baidu’s Apollo Go robotaxi service operates in multiple Chinese cities with plans to expand to Hong Kong, Singapore, and the Middle East.
