EasyJet CEO slams ‘unfair’ fine over additional baggage fees

EasyJet reported a record £3.59 billion in revenue from passenger add-ons, criticizing a recent Spanish fine. Ancillary revenue rose 22% year-on-year, as many airlines rely on additional fees to boost income amid intense competition. Spain fined five low-cost carriers for “abusive practices,” including easyJet, which was fined 29 million euros.

CEO Johan Lundgren defended the practice, arguing it benefits customers and keeps fares down. Spain’s Association of Airlines, Ryanair, Norwegian, and easyJet plan to dispute the fines over hand luggage charges and pricing transparency. EasyJet reported a full-year profit before tax of £610 million, up 34% year-on-year, driven by a strong summer performance and increased demand.

Meanwhile, rival Ryanair posted an 18% fall in half-year profits due to consumer spending pressure, online travel agency booking declines, and Boeing delivery delays. Ryanair, a major customer of Boeing’s B737-Max aircraft, has faced growth challenges due to extended delivery delays. Both airlines have returned to profitability after navigating challenges during the Covid-19 pandemic.
