General Motors laid off about 1,000 employees in an effort to cut costs and realign priorities amidst changing market conditions. Majority of the impacted employees were in suburban Detroit at the global technical center in Warren, Michigan. The layoffs included both salaried and hourly employees, with reasons ranging from poor performance to reorganizing priorities.

GM confirmed the layoffs but did not disclose the total amount. The company spokesperson mentioned the need to optimize for speed and excellence in a competitive market. The recent layoffs follow a previous round in August that saw over 1,000 salaried employees in GM’s software and services organization being let go. GM’s global salaried workforce was 76,000 as of the end of last year, with about 53,000 in the U.S.

The United Auto Workers union, representing hourly employees at GM, did not immediately respond for comment on the recent layoffs. GM stated that the restructuring efforts were aimed at operating with efficiency, having the right team structure, and focusing on top priorities as a business. The automaker is grateful to those who have contributed to positioning GM as a leader in the industry.
