Google proposes changes to search results in Europe to comply with Digital Markets Act

Google is proposing more changes to its search results in Europe after complaints from smaller rivals. Under the Digital Markets Act, Google cannot favor its own products. Recent changes have led to a 30% drop in direct booking clicks for hotels, airlines, and small retailers.

Google’s legal director, Oliver Bethell, stated that they are trying to accommodate requests while meeting DMA goals. Changes include expanded units, new formats for showing prices and pictures, and new ad units for comparison sites. Google plans to remove the map showing hotel locations in some countries.

The goal is to balance trade-offs with the DMA. Google is reluctant to remove helpful features, as it may not benefit consumers or businesses. The company could face charges and penalties under the new EU tech rules.
