Mitsui & Co, a 77-year-old conglomerate, embraces digital transformation with new technologies like generative AI and confidential computing. Collaborating with NVIDIA and Fortanix, they aim to accelerate R&D in healthcare, reducing drug development time and costs. Xeureka, a subsidiary, has successfully completed a proof of concept using confidential computing to share data safely in drug discovery.
Xeureka’s proof of concept demonstrated up to 74% higher accuracy in predicting toxicity levels of drug candidates. By combining datasets securely using NVIDIA H100 GPUs and Fortanix software, they eliminated bias issues and improved overall model accuracy. This breakthrough in confidential computing is set to revolutionize the pharmaceutical industry.
Xeureka plans to further utilize this technology in drug discovery research, collaborating with Tokyo-1, an AI supercomputer. The goal is to enhance efficiency in pharmaceutical companies by predicting protein structures, screening ligand-base pairs, and accelerating molecular dynamics simulations. This initiative aligns with Mitsui’s strategic growth plan to develop software and services for healthcare, powering Japan’s $100 billion pharma industry.
