U.S. prosecutors charged five members of cybercrime group Scattered Spider with hacking into U.S. companies to steal data and cryptocurrency. Phishing attacks targeted employees with fake text messages, leading to millions in losses. Victims included gaming, telecom, and cryptocurrency companies. Defendants face conspiracy and identity theft charges, with one also charged with wire fraud.

Defendants, in their teens or 20s, include individuals from Scotland, Texas, North Carolina, and Florida. Investigation traced phishing websites to Buchanan, who used late actor Bob Saget’s name in domain registration. Scattered Spider gained notoriety in 2023 for locking up casino networks and demanding hefty ransoms. Caesars paid $15 million to restore its network.

Security experts view Scattered Spider as unusually aggressive among cybercrime gangs. Caesars and MGM Resorts were among the victims of the group’s hacking. Prosecutors warn of sophisticated phishing attacks leading to significant losses. Evans was arrested in North Carolina, while Urban has pleaded not guilty in a separate fraud case in Florida.
