“Wicked,” the movie adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, raked in an impressive $114 million in the U.S. and Canada during its opening weekend. Starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, the film tells the story of the Wicked Witch of the West’s origin.

The movie, based on a Broadway prequel to “The Wizard of Oz,” also earned $50.2 million in international markets, bringing its estimated global total to $164.2 million. Universal Pictures reported that “Wicked” had the biggest opening weekend for a Broadway musical film, surpassing “Les Miserables.”
