Albertsons terminated its $25 billion merger with Kroger, filing a lawsuit claiming Kroger violated the contract by not divesting necessary assets for antitrust approval. Kroger called the allegations “baseless.” The deal, aimed at competing with Walmart, Amazon, and Costco, would have combined nearly 40 supermarket chains. Shares of both companies rose slightly after the news.
