Brussels probing scrapped Google-Meta ads deal targeting teens, violating online rules

European regulators are seeking more information from Google about a scrapped secret advertising partnership with Meta Platforms targeting 13- to 17-year-olds on YouTube to promote Instagram, violating rules on minors online treatment, FT reports. The partnership, now cancelled, was to go global. Alphabet’s lawyers were ordered to review data in October.
Despite the scrapped partnership, European Commission officials are investigating and considering action. Google defends its safeguards for teens, highlighting industry-leading protections. Meta, including Facebook, did not respond to requests for comment. Google restricts ad targeting for under 18s based on age, gender, and interests. Meta introduced enhanced privacy and parental controls for under 18 Instagram users earlier this year.
