China allows bus and truck drivers to apply for licenses until age 63

China is extending licence age limits for bus and truck drivers to address challenges from an aging population. Drivers can now apply for licences until age 63, with the option to extend for up to three years. This move is part of broader efforts to adapt to a shrinking labor pool and adopt autonomous vehicles in the transportation sector.
Previously, Beijing allowed male bus drivers to retire early at age 55 for safety reasons, but has since reversed course due to a declining workforce. The new policy aligns with a proposal to raise the national retirement age, with men retiring at 63 and women at 58 for white collar workers, and 55 for blue collar workers. China’s retirement age is currently one of the lowest globally.
The changes will take effect on Jan. 1, with a 15-year implementation period. This move will bring China more in line with regional peers like Japan and South Korea, who are also facing challenges from falling fertility rates and an aging workforce. Keeping older transportation workers on the job is key to maintaining stability in China’s transportation system.
