Chinese-linked Salt Typhoon cyberespionage operation targeted AT&T’s U.S. systems, but networks are now secure. China targeted individuals of foreign intelligence interest. AT&T detected only a few cases of compromised information. U.S. officials added a ninth telecom company to list of entities compromised by hackers, allowing them to “geolocate millions of individuals.”
U.S. Department of Defense and Federal Communications Commission did not respond to requests for comment. Previous cyberattack targeted Verizon, AT&T, Lumen, and other telecom companies. U.S. Cybersecurity Agency urged senior government and political figures to move mobile communications to encrypted apps. Salt Typhoon reportedly targeted officials from Kamala Harris and Donald Trump’s campaigns.
Chinese officials deny allegations of cyber attacks and theft. Concerns grow over scope of Chinese hacking into U.S. networks. Questions arise about when companies and government can assure Americans about the issue. China opposes and combats cyber attacks, according to Beijing.
