Jeju Air flight 7C2216 crashed at Muan International Airport, marking the deadliest accident on South Korean soil. Founded in 2005, Jeju Air is the country’s third-largest airline by passenger volume. The crash is the first fatal incident involving the budget carrier.

The previous deadliest air accident in South Korea was in 2002, when an Air China Boeing 767-200 crashed near Busan. In other incidents, a Korean Airlines flight was shot down by a Soviet jet in 1983, and a Korean Air flight crashed in Guam in 1997, killing 228.

In 1993, an Asiana Airlines Boeing 737-500 landed short of the runway in Mokpo, resulting in over 60 fatalities. Other incidents involving South Korean airlines include a cargo aircraft crash off Jeju Island in 2011 and the crash of an Asiana Airlines flight in San Francisco in 2013.
