Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 1.39%, with top gainers in retail stocks

Japan stocks closed higher on Thursday, with the Nikkei rising 1.39%. Top gainers included J.Front Retailing Co. (+8.27%) and Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings (+7.60%), while Rakuten Inc. (-2.09%) was among the worst performers. J.Front Retailing hit 5-year highs, while Eisai Co. hit 5-year lows. The Nikkei 225 volatility index fell 16.16%. Crude oil prices rose slightly, with Brent hitting $73.25. USD/JPY was down 0.02% at 157.38.
