On Dec. 12, 2010, Satoshi Nakamoto made his last known post on the Bitcoin forum before disappearing the next day, handing over Bitcoin’s development to the community. Fourteen years later, Bitcoin has evolved into a multi-trillion-dollar asset class without its creator’s involvement. Satoshi’s true identity remains unknown.
Bitcoin’s journey from almost worthless to $100,000 showcases its growth into a globally important financial asset. The Bitcoin network now has a $2 trillion market cap, surpassing silver in value and processing $131 trillion in volume through 1.12 billion transactions. Investors have seen $1.27 trillion in profits and $592 billion in losses, resulting in a net capital inflow of $750 billion.
As of Dec. 5, there were 1.8 million BTC (9.1% of the supply) on exchanges, 1.1 million BTC (5.6% of the supply) in U.S.-based ETFs, 700,000 BTC (3.5% of the supply) held by miners, and 187,000 BTC (0.9% of the supply) owned by the U.S. Treasury. This ownership spread highlights the diverse entities involved in Bitcoin.
