Indian shares open lower as investors await Fed decision, Sensex down 493 points, Nifty down 150

Indian shares opened lower on Tuesday as caution set in ahead of the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate decision on December 18. The benchmark S&P/BSE Sensex dropped 493 points to 81,255, while the NSE Nifty index fell 150 points to 24,519. Prominent decliners included Bharti Airtel, Grasim, Reliance Industries, Bajaj FinServ, and Shriram Finance. Life Insurance Corporation of India shares rose about 1 percent, with unclaimed maturity amounts of Rs 880.93 crore in 2023-24. Tata Consumer Products was down 1 percent, and Mindspace REIT fell 1.4 percent after a block deal. HDFC Bank dropped 1 percent due to a SEBI warning, while Wipro announced the acquisition of AVT for $40 million.
