Stellantis unit FCA US will pay $4.2 million to settle a California investigation into excess emissions from 2014-2016 Ram ProMaster diesel vehicles. The vehicles had an unapproved device that released 55 tons of excess oxides of nitrogen. Stellantis previously settled with California for similar allegations involving gas-powered vehicles.

As part of the settlement, Stellantis will recall the vehicles to modify the emission control system. The settlement includes a $2 million civil penalty for the state’s Air Pollution Control Fund and $2.1 million for a project to incentivize ocean-going cargo vessels to slow down during peak whale and ozone seasons.

In a separate federal emissions probe, FCA US pleaded guilty to criminal conspiracy and will pay about $300 million to resolve a U.S. Justice Department diesel emissions fraud investigation. California previously settled with FCA over allegations of using defeat device software on diesel vehicles, receiving over $78 million.
