The Canadian market closed 2024 on a high note, with energy and materials stocks leading gains. The S&P/TSX Composite Index rose 0.44% to 24,727.94, ending the year up 18%. Energy companies like Parex Resources and Baytex Energy saw significant increases, while Interfor Corp led gains in the Materials Index. Communication stocks BCE Inc and real estate stocks like Colliers International also posted gains. Overall, the market saw positive movement despite thin trading volumes and lackluster activity for much of the day. Healthcare and consumer discretionary stocks also performed well in the session.
