The Justice Department is urging a U.S. appeals court to deny TikTok’s emergency bid to block a law forcing its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to divest the app by Jan. 19 or face a ban. TikTok and ByteDance fear the law will shut down the app for over 170 million U.S. users.

The Justice Department argues that Chinese control of TikTok poses a national security threat, rejecting calls to delay the law’s effective date. TikTok and ByteDance filed an emergency motion with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia to prevent the app’s shutdown, emphasizing its importance as a speech platform.
