The U.S. Commerce Department has awarded $406 million in grants to Taiwan’s GlobalWafers to boost silicon wafer production in the United States. The investment will create high-volume production of 300-mm wafers, supporting nearly $4 billion in investments and creating 1,700 construction and 880 manufacturing jobs.

GlobalWafers plans to build a $5 billion plant in Texas and expand facilities in Missouri to produce wafers for advanced semiconductors. The move aims to increase domestic chip supply and reduce reliance on east Asia, where 90% of silicon wafers are currently produced.

In efforts to bolster the semiconductor industry, Commerce has finalized other awards including $6.165 billion for Micron Technology, $7.86 billion for Intel, $6.6 billion for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, and $1.5 billion for GlobalFoundries. These investments aim to strengthen the U.S. chip manufacturing and research sector.
