US awards billions to Samsung, Texas Instruments, and Amkor for chip production expansion

The U.S. Commerce Department is awarding up to $4.745 billion to Samsung Electronics and up to $1.61 billion to Texas Instruments for chip production expansion. Additionally, an award of up to $407 million is given to Amkor Technology for an advanced semiconductor packaging facility in Arizona. Samsung’s investment plans have been revised to $37 billion, down from $45 billion, to be completed by 2030. Texas Instruments is set to invest $18 billion in new factories, creating 2,000 jobs. Amkor’s Arizona plant will package chips for autonomous vehicles, 5G/6G, and data centers, with Apple as its first customer. Congress approved a $39 billion subsidy for U.S. semiconductor manufacturing. Commerce has finalized over $33 billion in proposed incentives funding, making the U.S. the only country with all five leading-edge semiconductor manufacturers.
