Apple experienced its worst performance in China since 2016, losing its top spot to Vivo and Huawei in smartphone sales. Canalys data showed a 17% decline in annual shipments, with Vivo capturing 17% market share, Huawei at 16%, and Apple at 15%. Factors like lack of AI capabilities contributed to Apple’s struggles.
Huawei’s comeback in the premium segment, with a 24% rise in shipments in the fourth quarter, has impacted Apple’s sales. Apple resorted to discounts in China to boost sales, with major e-commerce platforms offering promotions on iPhone 16 models. Xiaomi led in growth, with a 29% increase in shipments in the fourth quarter.
Overall, annual smartphone shipments in China in 2024 increased by 4% year-on-year to 285 million units. Budget-focused Xiaomi saw the strongest growth among the top five vendors, followed by Oppo and Vivo. Apple’s challenges in China highlight the increasing competition it faces from domestic manufacturers in one of its key markets.
