Apple is offering discounts up to 500 yuan on new iPhone models in China to combat rising competition from local rivals like Huawei. The promotion runs from Jan. 4-7, with the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max receiving the highest discounts. Consumer caution due to China’s slowing economy may be driving the move.

Huawei, with locally-made chipsets, has emerged as a strong competitor to Apple in China. Apple briefly fell out of the top five smartphone vendors in China in 2024 before recovering. Despite this, Apple’s smartphone sales in China slipped 0.3% in the third quarter, while Huawei’s surged 42%, according to IDC.

The promotion also includes discounts on older iPhone models, MacBook laptops, and iPad tablets. Customers must use specified payment methods like WeChat Pay or Alipay to qualify for the discounts. Apple’s move indicates a strategic effort to maintain its market share in China amidst stiff competition.
