Mixed performance in Asian markets during holiday trading, with tech shares dropping

Asian stock markets traded mixed on Tuesday, with most major markets closed for Lunar New Year holidays. Tech shares dropped after DeepSeek’s AI Assistant overtook ChatGPT on Apple’s App Store. Australian market remained flat, with S&P/ASX 200 above 8,400. Oil stocks slipped, while gold miners and banks saw mixed movements. Nuix shares fell 17% due to lower earnings, while Telix Pharmaceuticals surged 4% after acquiring RLS Radiopharmacies. In Japan, Nikkei 225 fell to 38,100 level, with SoftBank Group down 6%. Mitsubishi UFJ Financial gained over 1% in the banking sector. Major European markets were mixed, and crude oil prices fell 2%.

Stocks on Wall Street closed mostly lower on Monday, with technology sector experiencing significant losses. Dow closed up, S&P 500 ended down, and Nasdaq recorded a loss. European markets saw mixed results, with Germany’s DAX and France’s CAC 40 closing down. The UK’s FTSE 100 edged up slightly. Crude oil prices dropped sharply due to tariff threats and weak manufacturing data from China. West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures for March closed at $73.17 a barrel.
