A Chinese hack compromised multiple U.S. telecoms, including Charter Communications, Consolidated Communications, and Windstream. Hackers targeted unpatched devices from Fortinet and large routers from Cisco Systems. AT&T, Verizon, Lumen Technologies, and T-Mobile were also affected. China denied involvement, raising concerns about national security and infrastructure vulnerability.
U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan warned telecommunications executives about Chinese hackers gaining the ability to shut down critical infrastructure. AT&T and Verizon confirmed the Salt Typhoon cyberespionage operation targeted their systems, but they are now secure. Lumen and T-Mobile also reported stopping recent infiltration attempts to protect customer data. Verizon notified high-profile targeted customers.
Lumen stated no customer data was accessed during the attack, and T-Mobile prevented sensitive information from being compromised. Verizon assured containment of the incident, while Cisco and Fortinet did not comment. Salt Typhoon previously targeted officials from both Democrat and Republican political campaigns.
