Indian media outlets, including those owned by billionaires Adani and Ambani, are suing OpenAI for allegedly using their copyrighted content without permission. The lawsuit is part of a global trend where courts are addressing claims of copyright infringement by technology firms using AI services to scrape and adapt content.

OpenAI faces allegations of “wilful scraping” and adaptation of content, leading to concerns about the violation of valuable copyrights of Indian media companies. The case filing argues that OpenAI’s actions pose a threat to the creative works of Digital News Publishers Association members.

Indian outlets joining the lawsuit against OpenAI will strengthen the legal battle initiated by ANI, which is backed by Microsoft. The case is significant in India and highlights the ongoing debate about copyright infringement in the AI era, with a hearing scheduled for Tuesday.

OpenAI has denied the allegations, claiming fair use of publicly available data for its AI systems. The Indian media companies accuse OpenAI of entering into partnership agreements with foreign outlets but neglecting to do the same in India, impacting local media businesses.

The Indian publishers argue that OpenAI’s actions in India defy the law and could lead to a profit-driven business model that undermines press freedom and democracy. This legal challenge comes as OpenAI continues to expand globally after the success of its ChatGPT launch in 2022.

OpenAI’s growth in generative AI has sparked interest and investments worldwide, with the company raising significant funds to stay ahead in the AI race. Its recent hires in India, including a former WhatsApp executive, indicate a focus on expanding operations in the country with a large online user base.
