Major U.S. companies are scaling back diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, sparking controversies

Meta Platforms and Amazon.com are among U.S. companies scaling back diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts amidst pressure from conservative groups. At least six major companies, including JPMorgan Chase, have modified their DEI policies in 2024. Companies like Starbucks, Tractor Supply, Deere, Harley-Davidson, and more have either dropped or made tweaks to their DEI programs.

Starbucks shareholders voted to drop an executive bonus related to DEI goals. Tractor Supply will no longer submit data to the Human Rights Campaign and eliminate DEI roles. Deere won’t support external social or cultural awareness events. Harley-Davidson ended its DEI initiatives. Brown-Forman scrapped quantitative diversity goals.

Lowe’s will no longer participate in HRC surveys. Ford Motor is changing its DEI program. Molson Coors will end participation in the HRC index. Boeing dismantled its diversity department. Walmart is scaling back racial equity training and participation in HRC rankings. Meta ended DEI programs, while Amazon is winding down outdated programs and materials.
