Cognosphere, publisher of “Genshin Impact,” will pay $20 million to settle FTC allegations of violating children’s privacy laws. Children under 16 will need parental consent for in-game purchases. The FTC accused Cognosphere of marketing loot boxes unfairly, with misleading costs and prize odds. The game was developed by MiHoYo.
Cognosphere disagreed with some FTC allegations but settled to maintain community trust. They will implement new age-gate and parental consent features for young players. In-game disclosures about virtual currency and rewards will also increase for U.S. players in the future.
