Chuck Browning, a prominent leader in the United Auto Workers union who negotiated deals with Ford Motor, is retiring after leading negotiations with Volkswagen in Tennessee. Browning played a key role in securing record deals with automakers during last year’s strike, and is expected to retire after finalizing the Volkswagen contract.

UAW President Shawn Fain praised Browning’s leadership and bargaining skills, calling him one of the greatest leaders in the labor movement. Browning, who has been with the union since 2000, was elected as vice president in 2021 and sworn in for a second term in 2023 through the union’s first direct election.

Browning’s retirement comes ahead of the next union presidential election in 2026. His departure marks the end of an era for the UAW, as he leaves a legacy of strong leadership and successful negotiations with automakers. Browning’s contributions have strengthened the union and benefited its members for decades.
