Energy – European Gas Prices Surge
European gas prices hit their highest level since October 2023 due to supply disruptions and cold weather forecasts. TTF front-month futures rose over 6% to close above EUR51/MWh. European gas storage is only 55% full, down from 72% last year. Heating demand is expected to rise with dropping temperatures.
Metals – Aluminium Climbs as EU Readies Ban on Russian Imports
Aluminium prices rose after the EU proposed a phased ban on Russian aluminium imports. The plan includes an import quota for a year before a full ban. Russian aluminium imports to the EU have decreased over the past two years. The US and UK have already banned imports from Russia.
Metals – Base Metal Prices Stable
Base metal prices remained steady as the market reacted to comments from Fed Chair Jerome Powell. Expectations for rate reductions this year have been trimmed. Base metal inventories rose due to weak consumption before the Lunar New Year holidays.
Agriculture – Coffee Hit Fresh Record Highs on Supply Woes
Arabica coffee futures surged to record highs due to adverse weather and low global stockpiles. Brazil’s coffee production is forecasted to decline by 12.4% YoY. Total coffee stocks at US port warehouses are at their lowest, impacting global supply.
