A U.S. Army soldier from Colorado, Matthew Livelsberger, was identified as the person found dead in the Cybertruck explosion outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas on New Year’s Day. The FBI is investigating the incident, but it is unclear if it was an act of terrorism. Livelsberger acted alone and had military identification, firearms, and explosives in the vehicle.
Livelsberger shot himself before the explosion, which left seven people with minor injuries. He had two handguns, military identification, and credit cards in the Cybertruck. Livelsberger was on approved leave from the Army Special Operations Command at the time of his death and had received awards for valor during combat deployments in Afghanistan.
Witnesses captured videos of the Cybertruck exploding in front of the Trump hotel in Las Vegas. The vehicle was rented in Denver by Livelsberger and made stops in several cities before arriving in Las Vegas. The Trump hotel was evacuated following the explosion, but there is no definitive link between the incident and any particular ideology.
The Cybertruck and the vehicle used in the New Orleans attack were rented through the car-sharing service Turo. Livelsberger had rented the Cybertruck and drove through the Trump hotel’s driveway before the explosion. The FBI is investigating the incident, but no criminal background was found that would have identified Livelsberger as a security threat.
