South Korea’s authorities investigating the Jeju Air plane crash have submitted a preliminary accident report to the U.N. aviation agency and other countries. The investigation is focused on a possible bird strike and the landing guidance structure. The ICAO requires a preliminary report within 30 days and a final report within 12 months.
The Boeing 737-800 jet crashed into the localiser structure at Muan airport, killing all but two of the 181 people on board. Experts suggest the structure may have contributed to the disaster. Initial findings revealed the pilots discussed a bird strike during the final approach, with feathers and bird blood found on the engines.
After the crash and belly landing, a fire and partial explosion occurred. The engines were buried in the embankment’s soil mound, and the fuselage scattered up to 200 meters. The report does not explain why the data recorders stopped recording just before the pilots declared mayday. The aircraft was flying at 161 knots at 498 ft altitude.
