South Korea will release a preliminary report on the Jeju Air plane crash that killed 179 people by Monday, investigating the role of a possible bird strike in the tragedy. Flight data and cockpit voice recordings will be analyzed, with evidence suggesting the plane made contact with birds before crashing.
The report will be shared with the International Civil Aviation Organization, the U.S., France, and Thailand. CCTV footage shows the plane making contact with birds during a go-around before crashing. Duck feathers and blood were found in the plane’s engines, while the role of a concrete embankment supporting navigation antennas will be analyzed.
Experts believe the embankment likely worsened the disaster, which killed all aboard except for two crew members in the tail section. Communication recordings with the control tower stopped four minutes before the crash, with the pilots declaring a mayday due to a bird strike. The investigation is ongoing, with cooperation from U.S. and French aviation safety authorities.
