Consumers in several states are paying fees on new mattresses to support eco-friendly initiatives. States like California, Connecticut, Oregon, and Rhode Island have implemented flat fees to fund recycling programs. Americans discard 15-20 million mattresses annually, but over 75% of a mattress is recyclable. Other states are considering similar programs. Recycling options are limited but expanding, with just 58 companies nationwide offering mattress recycling services. Oregon’s program aims to make mattress recycling easy and reduce illegal dumping. Extended producer responsibility laws are gaining traction, with producers becoming responsible for managing waste. Retail fees on mattresses fund state recycling programs, covering operational costs and public education. Over 300 mattress collection sites in states with recycling programs accept discarded mattresses for free.
