TikTok may shut down in the US on Sunday due to federal ban

TikTok is set to shut down its U.S. operations on Sunday due to a federal ban, affecting 170 million American users. President-elect Trump may issue an executive order to suspend the ban for 60-90 days. A law signed in April mandates the ban if ByteDance fails to divest TikTok.

Users who have downloaded TikTok may still use the app, but U.S. companies will no longer be able to provide services for it starting Sunday. President Biden has no plans to intervene to block the ban. A proposal to extend the divestment deadline was blocked by a Republican Senator.

If banned, TikTok plans to direct users to a website with information about the ban. The company also plans to provide users with an option to download all their personal data. The U.S. Supreme Court is currently deciding whether to uphold, overturn, or pause the ban.

Shutting down TikTok in the U.S. could make it unavailable globally, affecting millions of users. The shutdown aims to protect service providers from legal liability and make it easier to resume operations if the ban is rolled back. ByteDance is required to sell its U.S. assets by January 19 or face a nationwide ban.
