TikTok faces a potential shutdown in the US on Sunday unless President Biden assures companies like Apple and Google they won’t face enforcement actions. The Supreme Court upheld a law banning TikTok unless its Chinese parent company sells it. Trump has vowed to save TikTok, but ByteDance has not divested.

Concerns over TikTok’s Chinese ownership have long existed. Lawmakers fear China could use TikTok for data collection on Americans for espionage. TikTok has become a popular platform in the US, especially among young users and small businesses. Users are shocked by the potential ban, with some already exploring other Chinese-owned apps.

The Biden administration has the power to free TikTok from Chinese control, but no action has been taken yet. The law prohibits certain services to TikTok and other foreign adversary-controlled apps. A viable buyer could still emerge, but so far only one notable bidder has shown interest. Trump could also invoke a law to keep TikTok for national security reasons.
